Common Usenet Error Messages

If you're having trouble connecting to Usenet, it's essential to familiarize yourself with common problems and error messages. Here's a list of some frequent issues and their potential solutions:

  1. 502 Authentication Error / 482 Invalid username or password

    • Meaning: This error means that your username and/or password for the Usenet server are incorrect.
    • Solution: Check and make sure that you've entered the correct credentials. Also, ensure your account is still active and hasn't expired. You may reset your Usenet password through the Services section of your client area. Your email address and password for our client area are NOT your Usenet credentials.
  2. 440 Posting Not Allowed

    • Meaning: You're trying to post a message, but the server doesn't allow it (either you don't have the right permissions or the server doesn't support posting).
    • Solution: All of our premium packages support posting, but some servers are read-only (free.xsusenet.com is no longer in use).
  3. 480 Authentication Required

    • Meaning: The server requires authentication, and you haven't provided it.
    • Solution: Ensure your newsreader software is set up to provide your username and password when connecting.
  4. 423 Bad Article Number or 430 No Such Article Found

    • Meaning: The article you're trying to access doesn't exist, perhaps because it's too old and has been purged from the server.
    • Solution: Try accessing a different article or a more recent one. Our retention is limited to 1100 days.
  5. 503 Service Unavailable

    • Meaning: The server is currently unavailable, possibly due to maintenance or overload.
    • Solution: Wait for a while and try again later.
  6. Too Many Connections

    • Meaning: You've exceeded the number of allowed simultaneous connections to the Usenet server.
    • Solution: Reduce the number of connections in your newsreader settings or wait and try again later.
  7. Connection Timeout

    • Meaning: The server isn't responding in a timely manner, possibly because it's overloaded or there are network issues.
    • Solution: Check your internet connection and try again later. If the problem persists, reach out to support.
  8. SSL/TLS Errors

    • Meaning: There's an issue with the secure connection to the Usenet server, possibly because of an outdated certificate or incorrect settings.
    • Solution: Ensure your newsreader supports the latest SSL/TLS protocols and that the server's SSL certificate is valid. Adjust your software's settings if necessary and if the problem persists, reach out to support.
  9. 411 No Such Group

    • Meaning: The newsgroup you're trying to access doesn't exist on our platform.
    • Solution: Check the spelling of the newsgroup. Although we strive to provide the highest completion rate and access, our retention is limited to 1100 days

For troubleshooting, always ensure:

  • Your internet connection is stable.
  • Your newsreader software is up-to-date.
  • You're using the correct server settings (address, port, SSL settings) provided by XS Usenet.
